This animation captures phenomena observed over the course of nine days following the neutron star merger known as GW170817. They include gravitational waves (pale arcs), a near-light-speed jet that produced gamma rays (magenta), expanding debris from a kilonova that produced ultraviolet (violet), optical and infrared (blue-white to red) emission, and, once the jet directed toward us expanded into our view from Earth, X-rays (blue). Did you know? Astronaut John Young almost commanded a third space shuttle mission! The mission was STS-61-J (Atlantis) Planned Launch Date: 18 August 1986 Mission was intended to deploy the Hubble Space Telescope into orbit. The Hubble Space Telescope, and most of the previously assigned crew (except Young, who was replaced by Loren Shriver), would eventually fly on STS-31 in 1990. The mission was canceled due to the Challenger disaster. #apolloprogram #projectapollo #spaceshuttle #spaceshuttleprogram #johnyoung #apollo16 #astronomy #universe #universetoday #flight #aviation #kennedyspacecenter #johnsonspacecenter #awesome #astronaut #astronauts #pilot #pilots #rocket #science #technology #awesome

For the second time in three years, snow has accumulated in the desert near the northern Algerian town of Aïn Séfra. Sometimes called the “gateway to the desert,” the town of 35,000 people sits between the Sahara and the Atlas Mountains. This image provides nadir (straight-down) closeups of the region, where snow covered dry mountaintops and the crests of tall sand dunes. NASA Earth Observatory image by Joshua Stevens, using Landsat data from the U.S. Geological Survey and topographic data from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM). Story by Mike Carlowicz.

My favourite star cluster 😍 #pleiades #sevensisters #Repost @thehubblescope (@get_repost) ・・・ Pleiades Deep Field . Have you ever seen the Pleiades star cluster? Even if you have, you probably have never seen it like this: all dusty. Perhaps the most famous star cluster on the sky, the bright stars of the Pleiades can be seen without binoculars from even the depths of a light-polluted city. With a long exposure from a dark location, though, the dust cloud surrounding the Pleiades star cluster becomes very evident. The above exposure took about 30 hours and covers a sky area several times the size of the full moon. Also known as the Seven Sisters and M45, the Pleiades lies about 400 light years away toward the constellation of the Bull (Taurus). A common legend with a modern twist is that one of the brighter stars faded since the cluster was named, leaving only six stars visible to the unaided eye. The actual number of Pleiades stars visible, however, may be more or less than seven, depending on the darkness of the surrounding sky and the clarity of the observer's eyesight. © NASA (APOD) . #amazing #astronomy #beauty #chandra #nasabeyond #constellation #creation #galaxy #hubble #hubbletelescope #interstellar #nature #nasa #cosmos #hubblehangout #space #universe #scripture #naturelovers #cosmology #science #hst

The Winter Milky Way . . Hi All, am glad to finally post a pic of our beautiful cosmos after a small interval. Sorry have been bit busy. I found this pic of rising Orion & a small meteor streak to the right of Rigel during the Orionids showers last October. Towards the left of Orion you can see the faint glow of the northern end of the Milky Way. This is a single exposure tracked shot at 16mm focal length. You can also notice the brightest star of the winter sky - Sirius at the bottom of the frame. I suppressed the countless stars in the frame to pop out the brightest stars in the frame including Sirius, Procyon, Pollux, Castor, Aldebaran & Pleiades. I was little sad after realizing Capella got cut from the top of the frame, which otherwise would’ve made for a pretty pic of the winter circle. 📷: 10/21/17 . . . . #earthskyscience  #spacedotcom #youresa  #universetoday  #twanight  #teamcanon  #natgeospace  #astrosprout . . . #yourshotphotographer #astrophotography #astrography_ #thenakedsingularity #astro_photography_  #nightscaper  #fantastic_universe #rsa_night #timelessuniverse #ohstarstuff #nightshooters #universe #nebula #orion #igworldclub_astrophotography #spaceclub #astronomy #winter #universe_dope #newmilkyway #ps_movement #pro_astrophoto

The Orion Molecular Cloud Complex (or, simply, the Orion Complex) is a large group of bright nebulae, dark clouds, and young stars in the Orion constellation. The cloud is between 1 500 and 1 600 light-years away, and hundreds of light-years across. Several parts of the nebula can be observed through binoculars and small telescopes, and some parts (such as the Orion Nebula) are visible to the naked eye. The nebula is important because of its sheer size, as it spreads several degrees from Orion's Belt to his sword. It is also one of the most active regions of stellar formation visible in the night sky, and is home to both protoplanetary discs and very young stars. The nebula is bright in infrared wavelengths due to the heat-intensive processes involved in the stellar formation, though the complex contains dark nebulae, emission nebulae, reflection nebulae, and H II regions. The presence of ripples on the surface of Orion's Molecular Cloud have been discovered recently. The ripples result from the expansion of the nebulae gas over pre-existing molecular gas. #space #universe #science #nebulae #telescope #star #discovery #spaceart #illustration #astrosexual #geology #planet #moon #earth #solarsystem #astronomy #galaxy #NASA #ESA #CSA #ISS #JPL #futurism #cosmic #cosmos #Hubble #Webb #JWST #HST #STScI

And finally, the candid photos of the night sky featuring my favourite star cluster, Pleiades (last photo). But wow, it was incredible! The Milky Way and Large Magellanic Cloud were so visible! And I saw a few satellites (the trail of one is slightly visible in the first photo), the ISS, and many shooting stars. (Looks best with brightness turned up).
